La Mesa Farmer's Market
After driving by the "Farmer's Market" sign in La Mesa numerous times,  which says they are open on Fridays from 2 to 6 pm, we finally made it there, actually on a Friday!.  It is located at University and Spring streets.  Lots of vendors with a large variety of fresh food, some locally grown and some from northern California.  There were the usual varieties found at most markets, plus some that are grown only by dedicated gardeners.  Like, tables full of 'heirloom' tomatoes - beautiful!  Beets that were sort of pink, with varigated centers.  One gal let me try some little pickle that was the size of an olive.  She said they were great!  They didn't suit my taste.  One lady had a table which featured objects from Kenya, made by children who were being schooled by professional artists to make figurines by hand.  Very unique.  A lady who made handmade copper jewelry, a booth with ladies blouses (I bought one), two or three booths with vegan specialties, and one featuring things like hummus, tabbouleh, and other stuff I've never seen before.  All in all, a nice little farmer's market.

The highlight of the trip was visiting a vendor who was NOT selling vegetables.  His thing was "skateboards" - or what he calls Blue Murphy's Original Wonderboards.  They range from two to eight feet long, one inch thick plywood boards painted in bright primary colors with complimentary psychedelic wheels.  Here us a link to his website.  It contains various pictures of the "Wonderboards" he manufactures in El Cajon.

This picture show how brave we are.  Hah! Neither of us have ever skateboarded in our lives.  Blue, the woodworker, could hardly get this picture taken, he was laughing so hard.  So, if you're in the market for a fancy "street cruiser" skateboard, check his site out, or look for him at the farmer's market on Fridays, from 2 to 6 pm.

Flag Day

We had to replace our store bought fiberglass flagpole that DE-constructed by itself after a little over one years use. So, I made this twenty foot metal flag pole. My deadline for its construction was June 14th, which is officially Flag Day. Having bought the pipe, welded it together, sanded it and primed it, it was finally time for the last item - paint. Before I tell you how the color was chosen, I need to explain that I painted three candle holders that were a prize find at Santee Swap Meet for 5 bucks. I painted them to match the flowerpot, that matched the swimming pool.

Now, when I asked Deinna what color I should paint the flagpole, she said ..... (expletive deleted) "BLUE". I guess she must be going through some strange period in her life, some 'blue period' perhaps. I just hope she doesn't get some wild hair and want to paint the house . . . or maybe she's just watched Avatar too many times.

Anyway, that's the story of how we ended up with this BLUE flagpole . . . that matches the blue candle holders, that matches the blue flowerpot, that matches the blue swimming pool. I'll sure be glad when I run out of this blue paint.

Fred Foy Dies At Home In Massachusetts Aged 89
The voice of the Lone Ranger, one the most recognizable for his cry of "Hi-Yo, Sliver!" has past at the age of 89.
One more of my childhood memories is no more.

"With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains, led the fight for law and order in the early west." - Fred Foy.

Bird Feeder
We purchased two metal bird feeders design for finches. Deinna found this fabric sock at the feed store. This one is the most active of the three. The only problem with it, it only last a day and a half to be emptied by the flock.

The last roll of Kodachrome!
The last roll of Kodachrome has been made by Kodak and was given to Steve McCurry to expose.

In 1984, photojournalist Steve McCurry was in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan. He followed the sound of voices to a tent where he found a group of girls. "I noticed this one little girl off to the side that had his incredible set of eyes that seemed almost haunted — or very piercing," he tells NPR's Audie Cornish.

Cattleman's Pit BBQ, Jamul CA

We stopped for lunch today at the new Cattleman's Pit BBQ here in Jamul CA to "give it a try".  We met the owner, Gabriel - a nice young man with a pleasant personality.  We spoke for a while and learned he bought his smoker in Beaumont, Texas.  He takes pride in his barbecue sauce, which he should.  It's quite tasty!  He's only been open a few months.

Deinna and I were pleasantly surprised with the great sandwich we had for our lunch.  We had the BBQ Pork Combo.  This included the pork sandwich smothered in barbecue sauce, a generous portion of cold slaw, baked beans and a soda for $9.00.  We added an appetizer of onion rings, couldn't resist, for $4.00.  We highly recommend you stop in and give Jamul's newest eatery some support.  Maybe you'll like it too!  And maybe we'll see you there.

Veterans Day Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery
On this day, we pause to remember the veterans who have proudly served this country. Visiting the 77 plus acres at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, Ca., one is overwhelmed by the sheer number of graves. Many Fort Rosecrans interments date to the early years of the California Territory, including the remains of the casualties of the Battle of San Pasqual. In the Battle of San Pasqual, 19 of Kearney’s men and an untold number of Californios lost their lives. Initially, the dead were buried where they fell, but by 1874 the remains had been removed to the San Diego Military Reservation. Eight years later, the bodies were again reinterred at what is now Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Number of Interments Thru Fiscal Year 2008: 96,626.

Of the 96,000+ interments, many spouses and minor children are among the buried.  Requirements for interment in a national cemetery can be found at this LINK.
